Beer and Bloating

If you are left feeling bloated after a couple of beers, you are not alone, but it may not be the bubbles making you bloated...

Bloating is when your belly feels swollen or enlarged after eating or drinking. Bloating is very common - about 30% of people say they experience it regularly.

Often beer is labelled as a bad guy for bloating, so people choose an alternative drink… but maybe it’s not the bubbles in your beer making you bloated. Have you ever considered it could something else?

According to the Medical Journal of Australia, 25% of Aussies (6 Million of us!) avoid gluten at certain times in their diet due to abdominal discomfort or other symptoms.

Bread, pasta.... and BEER

Gluten can be hard to spot, especially if you are an occasional avoider - you just may not be looking out for it when grabbing a beer from the fridge. It’s easy to avoid some of the most obvious sources like bread and pasta, but many people avoiding gluten are often not aware that beer is usually made from barley wheat, oats and rye - all grains containing gluten.

Beer does not require an ingredient list or allergen labelling so the gluten is hidden in plain sight.

How about gluten reduced beer?

Just like bread or pasta, once you put gluten in, there is no way to remove it. Research from Edith Cowan University, WA, has shown that the “gluten reduced” beers in the market often contain just as much gluten as regular beers, and because they are not produced in dedicated gluten free environments or with ingredients from a gluten free supply chain, they almost always (8 from 9 samples tested) have wheat cross contamination.

If gluten or wheat sensitivity is the cause of your bloating, you need to pick a 100% gluten free alternative.

You CAN still have a great beer without feeling bloated.

Many of our customers have reported that although they are not diagnosed with Coeliac Disease or a gluten intolerance, they don’t experience feeling bloated when drinking gluten free beer.
